POV: you get matcha nails to match your drink

Matcha is taking over, and it’s not just for drinks anymore

Okay, the matcha obsession is real. And it’s everywhere. It started off as a cute drink to replace our daily cup of coffee, but now it’s infiltrating every part of the beauty industry, too. I bet you’ve heard everywhere of the matcha latte makeup trend, or seen the countless matcha face mask recipes and formulas out there, or all these skincare products infused with matcha for its antioxidant properties. Well… now, it’s also on your nails.

Yup, matcha nails are officially a thing, and I’m all here for it.

Why matcha nails?

If you’re already obsessed with matcha like I am (honestly, who isn’t at this point?), then matcha nails are your next obvious step. Just like with your matcha lattes and face masks, they’re extra, customizable, fun, and so aesthetic.

And yeah, there are a lot of nail polish that you can buy out there that are matcha-inspired. But making your own shade? With actual matcha? That is next-level matcha guru.

So yeah, here’s a fun DIY you can totally flex on your TikTok, Insta, or wherever you like sharing your beauty experiments.

Supplies/ingredients you need

  • Water-based, non-toxic clear nail polish

  • Matcha DNA’s organic matcha powder

  • Small disposable container (use something you don’t mind getting a little matcha stain on or that you can just throw away)

  • Mixing stick (you can use a toothpick, popsicle stick, or even the back of a thin paintbrush, whatever you can find)

How to make your own matcha nail polish

  1. Prep the matcha: Start off with a small amount of matcha powder in your container. Tbh this whole thing is very intuitive, and I can’t really tell you how much to use because it depends on the shade that you want. So just go with the flow! You can always add more if you want a deeper color.

  2. Pour in your base polish: Pour the entire bottle of clear, water-based nail polish into your container. You’ll need some patience to do this, ngl

  3. Mix it well: Grab your mixing stick and get to it. Mix the matcha and polish until it’s smooth and clump-free. Again, take your time with this because it’s not super simple, and you have to make sure it’s as blended as possible.

  4. Test it: Feel free to test the color on a nail and add more matcha if you want it greener. Remember, you can always layer for a richer, deeper color, as well.

  5. Pour it back: Once you’re happy with it, carefully pour your new matcha polish back into the original bottle. A tip to not make a mess and lose half of the polish you just made? Use a funnel, or make one with cardboard or paper.

  6. Shake it up: Close the nail polish bottle and give it a good shake for around a minute or two to make sure everything is fully blended.

  7. Apply and glow: And that’s it! Now you can get a matcha mani at home.

Don’t have time for all that? Here’s an easy fix

If you aren’t really in the mood for DIYs, here’s a quicker method to get those matcha nails at home:

  1. Prep your nails: Make sure your nails are clean and dry, and apply a clear base coat. This will help the matcha powder stick.

  2. Apply the matcha: Lightly pat matcha powder directly onto your nails. You can use a small paintbrush or makeup brush to do so.

  3. Coat it: Obviously, you need to seal the powder somehow. So get a clear, semi-permanent nail polish, apply a coat or two, and use a UV LED lamp to lock it in.
