Last week, I was searching for easy, fun DIYs to try with matcha powder (of course), and I came across these matcha lotion bars that you can use as moisturizer. Reading through it (shoutout to Stephanie from Hello Glow, I think I owe her lots of the matcha projects I try!), it sounded like pure magic for your skin.
These lotion bars are super hydrating, keeping your skin moisturized while staying solid at room temperature, and they melt just right when rubbed on your skin. Plus, they’re simple to make, don’t need crazy ingredients, and you’ll get to add a splash of fun, matcha-coded flair to your beauty routine, which can’t go wrong if you’re matcha-obsessed like me.
Let’s get down to it, shall we?
What are lotion bars? And why should you make them?
Before we get to it, a lotion bar is exactly what it sounds like: lotion for your body that comes in a solidified format. A skincare product that’s as easy to use as it is to make, and also more sustainable than your store-bought plastic pot of moisturizer.
Lotion bars are amazing for several reasons:
-
You can use them after a sunny day to soothe your skin. Think of them as your beach bag essential.
-
They are perfect to hydrate those extra dry spots like elbows, knees, or feet.
-
Since they’re solid and don’t melt at room temperature, they’re actually great because you can carry them around in your bag for on-the-go hydration. Perfect for traveling, for example?
So obviously, we have a great base product. But what would make it even better? You got it, adding matcha 💚
Here’s what you’ll need to make these matcha lotion bars
-
1 cup cocoa butter
-
1 cup coconut oil
-
½ cup beeswax
-
2 tsp Matcha DNA’s matcha powder, full of antioxidants that can calm and nourish your skin
-
20 drops sweet orange essential oil (or why not, you could probably use whichever essential oil you want)
Step-by-step instructions
-
Prepare your double boiler: Fill a medium pot with a bit of water and bring it to a boil. Place a bowl inside the pot to create a double boiler. This will help melt all ingredients without burning them.
-
Melt the base ingredients: Add the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and beeswax into your bowl. Stir occasionally until everything melts into a smooth liquid.
-
Matcha-fy it: Once our oil base is fully melted, remove from the heat and add the matcha powder (sifted for fewer clumps) and essential oil. Stir well until everything is fully combined.
-
Make the bars: Got that mixture completely incorporated? Go ahead and pour it into your molds (silicone ones are great because they’ll be easy to take out later). Let them cool down at room temperature (maybe you could pop them in the fridge?) and harden completely before popping them out.
-
Use your lotion bars: That’s it! You got your matcha lotion bars! Now, to use them, it’s as simple as rubbing them onto your skin. You’ll see it’ll melt slightly on contact, leaving your skin feeling soft and hydrated.
