POV: you just made a matcha affogato and it slaps

I’m on a quest to find the best matcha recipe out there, which means I’m doing a lot of them. This time? Matcha affogato, a combination of creamy and cold vanilla ice cream with umami-rich matcha. Sounds like the ideal dessert for summer, right?

Turns out, I’m not the only one rethinking the rules. Did you know Gen Z is 47% more likely to experiment with global flavors in everyday treats? The matcha affogato is where east meets scoop. It’s minimalist chaos. It’s soft-serve drama. And it tastes like green tea just put on its best outfit for the afterparty.

Let me show you how I made my own, no fluff, no rituals. Just good vibes, yummy matcha, and a dangerously easy way to flex your taste.

The basics: what you need to make a matcha affogato

Let’s start simple. The magic of a matcha affogato is that it needs exactly two things: good matcha and good vanilla ice cream. That’s it. No espresso machine, no weird gadgets. Just a bowl, a whisk, and a spoon you’ll probably end up licking clean.

  • 1 scoop (or two) of good-quality vanilla ice cream

  • 1 scoop of Matcha DNA’s organic matcha powder

  • 2 oz hot water (but not boiling!)

How to make it (a.k.a. the “whoa” moment)

It’s no complicated task, check it out:

  1. Make your matcha: As you usually would, heat your water until it’s hot, but not boiling. In a small bowl or cup, add 1 scoop of matcha powder. Pour in the water and whisk vigorously until it’s smooth and frothy.

  2. Prep your ice cream: Place your scoop(s) of vanilla ice cream in a small bowl or glass. Bonus points if it’s a cute bowl 🎀

  3. Affogato time: Slowly pour the warm matcha over the ice cream and let it do its thing. Swirls, melting, flavor fusion… pure drama.

Wanna remix it? Here’s how to make it your own

I hope you know at this point that I’m all about encouraging you guys to personalize your recipes and make them your own. So, of course, now that you’ve nailed the base version, it’s time to play.

Why not swap the vanilla ice cream for these?

  • Coconut ice cream (tropical and dreamy)

  • Chocolate (intense and indulgent)

  • Ube (because purple + green = aesthetic chaos)

  • Oat milk ice cream (for a plant-based twist)

Or add some extras?

  • Add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup

  • Sprinkle a tiny bit of flaky sea salt

  • Top it with crushed pistachios or mochi bits

Basically, the matcha affogato is your blank canvas. Make it minimal, make it extra, make it yours. Either way, it’s going to look amazing on your feed, and taste even better.

You + matcha + ice cream = a dessert worth repeating

And just like that, you’ve turned a scoop of ice cream and a spoonful of matcha into something totally unexpected, and totally craveable. It’s quick, surprisingly elegant, and open to all kinds of remixes depending on your vibe.
